Krewe of Sparta – Food Drive

Posted on: January 20th, 2021 by brent

Pensacola, FL (January 20, 2021) – The Krewe of Sparta is holding its 10th Annual All Krewe Humanitarian Award Food Drive Challenge now through February 4th, and is encouraging all Pensacola Mardi Gras Krewes to participate. The food drive benefits the hungry in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties served by Manna Food Bank.

Traditionally, food is collected by Krewe of Sparta at a single-day event where all participating krewes come together to celebrate their contributions with music, fare and drinks. However, due to COVID-19, changes have been made to the format of the event. This year, participating krewes will schedule their donation drop-off at Manna now through February 4.

“When we learned how great the need is for food assistance in our community right now, we knew this food drive could not be another postponed event,” said Jimmy Hendrix of Krewe of Sparta. “So, we adapted to make it as safe as possible while ensuring Manna gets the food they need to distribute to folks in need.”

As in years past, points are assigned as food is weighed-in from each krewe, and krewes with the most points win the challenge. Double points will be awarded for the following items: chicken and tuna (cans not larger than 16 oz. and pouches), microwaveable dinners (e.g. Hormel Compleats) and fruit in 100% juice (cans not larger than 32 oz. and cups with peel-off tops). Double points items must be pre-sorted prior to delivering to Manna.

Winners of the food drive challenge will be named in two categories: Small Krewe Division (45 members or less) and Large Krewe Division (46 members or more). Both divisions will be awarded a first place trophy with recognition given for second and third places. Last year, krewes donated 35,149 pounds of food.

All Pensacola Mardi Gras Krewes are invited to join the competition and help make a difference in the community. To sign up or for more information, krewe representatives should contact Jimmy Hendrix at jameswhendrix04@gmail.comor (850) 791-0619.

Cordova Mall Ball 2021 – Virtual – January 30

Posted on: January 12th, 2021 by brent

Mall Ball 2021The 2021 Cordova Mall Ball will be going virtual! The 26th annual event, presented once again by Sandy Sansing Dealerships, will be held Saturday, Jan. 30, 2021. Proceeds will be designated for the Bear Family Foundation Pediatric Oncology Center for Hope, now under construction at the Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Ascension Sacred Heart.

Faced with the continuing challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic brings to the community, the decision was made to create a virtual event for safety reasons, including the safety of hundreds of volunteers, staff and guests.

A safer, creative approach for the 2021 event is in the works with the same level of excitement, entertainment and experience for guests to enjoy — either online from home or via the Virtual VIP experience. Our Virtual VIP package for $65 includes a drive-in style viewing of the event at Cordova Mall, entertainment by a New Orleans-style jazz band, a to-go style meal from one of our participating restaurants, and an exclusive swag bag of goodies. Join the Krewe of Les Petits Enfants for a night of fun, all while continuing to raise funds for the children. “We are thrilled to be able to continue this event in a new way in 2021 to benefit children battling cancer,” said Carol Carlan, president of Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation. “We know that the families of these young patients need support so that they can be the very best support for their loved one who is fighting cancer. This new center will provide areas where a family can enjoy some family togetherness during a challenging time in their lives.”

With a total of 16,000 square feet, the center will feature nine all-private rooms, a playroom, a spacious family lounge, a movie room, laundry room and gym- enabling families to spend as much time together as possible while they focus on healing.  It will be a new addition that will continue the spirit and legacy of Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola’s first pediatric oncologist, Dr. Thomas G. Jenkins.

For the past 25 years, 100 percent of the proceeds from the Cordova Mall Ball has gone to provide high-quality, personalized care to children of families in our region, allowing families to avoid costly trips out of town for the same level of care.

“Although we won’t be together in the traditional way, we promise our community a night of fun, Mardi Gras style — all  from the comfort of your home,” said Carlan.

Guests can register at cordovamallball.com. Follow the Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation Facebook page for exciting updates. For event information and sponsorship opportunities, please contact Jennifer Saba, jennifer.saba@ascension.org, or call 850-416-4661.

Pensacola Mardi Gras postpones kickoff

Posted on: December 28th, 2020 by Candy

PMG

Pensacola Mardi Gras Inc. is postponing the 2021 Season Kick-Off Celebration and Blessing  of the Krewe Fleets event previously scheduled on January 8th, 2021. This year, the event will  be moved to the month of May and will kick-off an even larger Pensacola “Carnivale  Celebration.”

“We want to have the best Mardi Gras experience for our wonderful Krewes of Pensacola, in  the safest way possible for the entire community,” said Danny Zimmern, President of  Pensacola Mardi Gras, Inc. “This year, that is just going to look a little different from the  experience we all know and love, as we celebrate together in Carnivale”

The decision to postpone derived from many long and detailed conversations between  Pensacola Mardi Gras, the Mayor, and City Staff with focus centered on public health. Due to  the current rising number of virus cases, the team members of Pensacola Mardi Gras Inc. and  the City of Pensacola staff agreed that postponing the event was the most responsible course of  action. This decision was difficult but will not mean a cancellation of ceremonies for  Pensacola’s great Krewes and a Grand Parade. Postponing means a slight change in  celebration, but means we gather as Krewes and citizens to celebrate together.

“The spike in hospitalizations makes a postponement of celebrations logical” says Mayor  Grover Robinson. “At City Hall, we recognize how important the community of our great  Krewes is, and we want to celebrate all together. We look forward to gathering after this pause,  outside and being socially responsible at Roger Scott, and in the historic streets of  Downtown.”

The one-time, unique 2021 Carnivale Celebration will begin in May and is set to include a  Kick-Off celebration to ignite the experience, as well as a Grand Parade, and a few other  unique and exciting experiences inspired by the local krewes, and will lead into Pensacola’s  celebration of its history, Fiesta. The Grand Fiesta Parade will be on Friday June 4, 2021.

For those who have already purchased tickets to the original Kick-Off event, all tickets remain  valid for the 2021 Carnivale Kick-Off Celebration in May and will include a unique gift from  the Pensacola Mardi Gras Inc. team as a special thank-you for your support in 2020 during a  unique year that we have all been forced to deal with. This includes VIPs and VIP upgrades.  All ticket buyers will receive direct email correspondence in the coming days, which will  provide more information.

The 2021 Kick-Off will take place in the same location and will include the traditional  Blessing of the Krewes along with a concert style dance party featuring beverages and food.  Tickets to the 2021 Carnivale Kick-Off Celebration will again be available for purchase  starting on February 1, 2021 on the Pensacola Mardi Gras website. Beginning on February 1,  2021, tickets will be re-priced at $50 for general admission and $120 for VIP tickets, which  will be limited in number. More details regarding what is included in the ticket purchase will  be announced.

Pensacola Mardi Gras is not cancelled, it is postponed, and Pensacola is following other Gulf  Coast Communities in re-envisioning a classic celebration of our community, Krewes, and  customs. A series of events will tie multiple celebrations together, with a Kick-Off in the end  of May, (the precise date of the Kick-Off Celebration and Blessing of the Krewes will be  announced soon) a Grand Carnivale Parade (replacing the Grand Mardi Gras Parade) on  Saturday May 29, 2021 (Memorial Weekend), Fiesta Days on Wednesday June 2, 2021 and the  Grand Fiesta Parade on Friday June 4, 2021.

Although the 2021 Mardi Gras Kick-Off event is being moved to the summer, the spirit of  Mardi Gras will once again fill Pensacola as Krewes and patrons alike will gather to celebrate  a mini-Carnivale season. The headliners and performers will carry over into the Carnivale  Celebration to provide entertainment at the outdoor venue.

The Carnivale Kick-Off and Grand Parade will still be a series of socially responsible events  that include masks (Laisse le Masque le Faire!), socially distanced seating and dance areas,  temperature checks at the entrances, and all transactions including entrance and purchases will  be cashless using a special RFID technology.

For more information about Pensacola Mardi Gras, please visit our website,  pensacolamardigras.com, email us at pensacolamardigras@gmail.com, or call us at 850-465- 4657.

Pensacola Eggfest – Good Food Cook Book

Posted on: October 27th, 2020 by brent

The EggFest team is re-imagining its event for 2020. The annual Pensacola foodie event, normally held at Pensacola Blue Wahoos Stadium, raises money for local charities while serving up some of the best barbeque in the South. This year will focus on all of the yummy and unique recipes celebrity chefs and cook teams have shared over the years in a scaled-down format that lets barbeque lovers get their hands on the actual recipes.

“Pensacola EggFest has raised more than $360,000 for local charities like childhood cancer and systemic hunger and has served more than 20,000 meals to those in need,” said Lisa Long, EggFest co-chair. “We have to keep that going — it’s our mission — and the community is depending on it. EggFest will not only survive, but thrive in 2020.”

Today, the charity is launching the pre-sale of Good Food, a collection of stories and recipes from EggFest Award-Winning Pitmasters from across the U.S. That will be followed by a Launch Party where past celebrity chefs and judges will be on hand to sign the Good Food recipe books and dole out bites of their favorite dishes cooked on a Big Green Egg.

“This really is the heart of EggFest,” said co-chair, Jerold Hall. “Good Food is all about harnessing the love of barbeque and camaraderie of cooking to raise money for well-deserving charities. This recipe book will take Pensacola EggFest to the next level, putting the much sought-after recipes right into the hands of barbeque foodies from all over the Pensacola area. And there will be plenty to eat, too!”

Those interested in getting in on the pre-sale of Good Food, the Pensacola EggFest Recipe Book should go to www.PensacolaEggfest.com and watch for the launch. Details to follow on the Celebrity Chef Launch Party date and location. All recommended precautionary health measures will be taken.
