Cat Country 98.7 partnered with WEAR-ABC3 & WFGX-35 to raise money in “OPERATION: HELP OUR NEIGHBOR”.
Hurricane Michael came ashore on October 10, 2018 as the strongest Hurricane ever to make landfall in Northwest Florida. Panama City and Apalachicola were devastated by this Category 4 storm. Entire communities were leveled and residents were left with almost nothing. Disasters like Hurricane Michael have previously hit Pensacola and the Community here rallied to donate more than $87,000 in a one-day fund drive led by CatCountry 98.7 and WEAR-ABC 3.
The funds raised today go directly to the Florida Disaster Fund to be immediately put to use helping rebuild devastated communities around Panama City. “Our listeners are no stranger to storms and this could have easily been our community,” says Brent Lane from CatCountry 98.7. Brent joined WEAR’s news anchor Sue Straughn starting at 5am Friday to broadcast live throughout the day. “Thank you for this amount of love and support from our generous community,” says Sue Straughn.
Had Hurricane Michael landed only 100 miles to the west, this would have been our community. “The difference between a half inch of rain and total devastation is 3 counties,” said Lane.
Dave Hoxeng, station owner, said “CatCountry 98.7’s mission is to help our community in every way that we can.”

Wednesday, May 9, 2018 (Pensacola) – Last Prize Standing 2018 was a fun Cat Country 98.7 Station Contest that took on a whole new meaning when Dana Minchew claimed her $5000 Savings Account at Central Credit Union. It started with 102 possible prizes on a grid. One by one 100 prizes where eliminated, leaving only 2. Each time a prize was eliminated that contestant became a qualifier for the drawdown at Bob Tyler Toyota on Sunday, May 6th. At the end of the drawdown the last ball in the hopper belonged to Dana Minchew from Pensacola. She made the $5000 Savings Account at Central Credit Union the Last Prize Standing. She explained that she choose the savings account because her 1.5 year old daughter had recently been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and that she would use the money to offset medical expenses in the future. Today, she arrived with her daughter Cora to claim her savings account. What she didn’t know was that an anonymous donor heard her story and called and offered to match her prize winnings. Cat Country 98.7 presented Dana with her winnings and then surprised her with the additional check. She said she was speechless.
Thank you to the team at Central Credit Union for being a part of today and sharing in the incredible surprise.
Daryle Singletary reportedly passed early this morning of an apparent heart attack.
The news was shared by Craig Campbell on social media.
“Completely heartbroken to learn of the passing of our friend Daryle Singletary this morning,” the statement reads. “He was one of the best men we’ve had the privilege to meet and work with in this business, both professionally and personally…”
Daryle Singletary was born March 10, 1971 in Cairo, Georgia. He and his wife, Heather were lifelong Dogs fans. At an early age, he sang gospel music with his cousins and brother. Later on, in high school, he began taking vocal classes as well. By the early 1990s, he had moved to Nashville, Tennessee in pursuit of a record deal.
In Nashville, he found work singing during open-mic nights at various venues, before finding work as a demo singer. One of the demos that Singletary sang was “An Old Pair of Shoes”, which Randy Travis eventually recorded. Travis recommended Singletary to his management team, who helped him sign to a recording contract with Giant Records.
Daryle was best known for his hits, “Too Much Fun”, “Let Her Lie” and “Low Expectations”. He was on tour and last played the Rodeo Club in Dadeville, AL Friday night. In what turned out to be one his last interviews, he expressed his love of making music to pay the bills, to Mitch Sneed in the Alex City Observer.
“Every time I get on stage I can’t help think about how lucky I am to be standing up there doing something that I love the way that I do,” Singletary said in a telephone interview last week. “We’ve been very fortunate to stay on the road, year in, year out – for 22 years now. I continue to work and continue to build a fan base…”
“There’s no magic formula. I just go out there and play the music I love and have a good time with it. Thankfully for us, there are still a lot of people out there who want to hear traditional country music and they’ve been finding their way to our shows all over the country.”
Daryle Singletary was 46. He is survived by his wife, Heather, and four children.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – UWF head football coach Pete Shinnick was named the Division II National Coach of the Year, as announced by the American Football Coaches Association during the live broadcast of the American Football Coaches Awards®, presented by Amway, at the Charlotte Convention Center Tuesday.
Shinnick led the Argonauts to an 11-4 record and advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championship Game in their second season of competition. UWF went 5-3 in the ultra-competitive Gulf South Conference to finish tied for second. The Argonauts won a school record six-consecutive games which included five against nationally ranked teams en route to the title game appearance.
UWF was ranked second in the final AFCA Top 25, marking its first-ever ranking after receiving votes twice during the 2017 season.
The Argos had the nation’s 20th-ranked defense and were among the top 20 in sacks, turnovers gained, interceptions, fumbles recovered, fourth down defense and defensive touchdowns.
UWF had a number of exciting events transpire in 2017. Among the highlights in the regular-season were: A goal line turnover in the final seconds to secure a win at Missouri S&T in the season opener; The team tied a school-record with 51 points in a win over Chowan; Austin Williams kicked a field goal as time expired in a wild road win over Florida Tech to claim the Coastal Classic for the second-consecutive year, Marvin Conley had a 98-yard pick-6 in the last minute to preserve a 28-14 win over Mississippi College; the Argos defeated North Alabama 30-7 on Senior Day; UWF erased a 16-0 deficit to defeat West Georgia 34-29 and earn a berth into the postseason, becoming the fastest startup to reach the playoffs in Division II.
The postseason run proved to be just as exciting, captivating the nation as the team knocked off one top-25 opponent after another, beginning with a dominating 31-0 win at No. 16 Wingate. A 17-14 win at No. 25 West Georgia followed before winning the Super Regional 2 championship at No. 17 West Alabama. The national semifinals saw another dominating defensive performance as the Argonauts outlasted top-ranked and undefeated Indiana (Pa.), 27-17 to advance to the title game.
The award is the first for Shinnick, who is 16-10 in two years at UWF and 129-56 in 16 seasons as a head coach.
He becomes the ninth coach in UWF history to win a national coach of the year award. That group includes women’s soccer coach Joe Bartlinski, men’s golf coach Steve Fell, baseball coach Mike Jeffcoat, diving coach Barbara Parker and men’s tennis coach Derrick Racine.
UWF now has three reigning national coaches of the year with Fell, Racine and Shinnick.
