# Candy puts Mentos in Diet Coke

What happens when you add a Mentos to Diet Coke? When you put Mentos in soda like Diet Cola there is a massive eruption of cola and CO2 gas. The process which causes the reaction is called **nucleation**. Since each Mentos is covered in little grooves thus having more surface area than it were if it were smooth.
