Donut Strike for Manna – June 23-25

Posted on: June 16th, 2021 by brent

mannaLocal law enforcement and fire departments — known for fighting crime and fires — are teaming up again this year to fight hunger.

These fierce first responders are going on strike against the portable breakfast treat beginning Wednesday, June 23 through Friday, June 25 to encourage the community to fight local hunger by supporting Manna. During the Donut Strike, they’ve promised not to eat a single donut until the community has donated 30,000 healthy meals to fight hunger in Northwest Florida.

Each day of the Donut Strike, officers and fire fighters man their posts from 3 to 6 p.m. at grocery store locations across Escambia and Santa Rosa counties to collect food and monetary donations from the public. For participating grocery locations in your area, please visit www.mannahelps.org. Food donations and financial gifts to Manna may also be dropped off at their hunger headquarters, 3030 North E Street, Pensacola, any day during the Strike, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Childhood hunger has worsened — one in three children in our community will go to bed hungry tonight,” said DeDe Flounlacker, Executive Director of Manna. “We so appreciate the support of our local first responders during these critical summer months, when children are out of school and the need for help increases.”

The success of Donut Strike is critically important this year, as Manna faces a second year of devastating food donation losses due to the cancellation of the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. That food drive typically yields 60,000-80,000 pounds of food each year for Manna leading into the busier summer season, when children can no longer count on the free meals at school for nutrition.

This is the fourth year of the Donut Strike and so far, the pastry protest has raised more than 80,000 pounds of food to help fight hunger in our communities. The Donut Strike wrap party will be held at J’s Bakery and Café — the event’s donut sponsor — on June 29 at 8 a.m. to announce and celebrate the total meal count and of course to eat dozens and dozens of donuts and have coffee with our heroes. All are welcome.

Participating agencies include the Escambia County Fire Department, Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, Gulf Breeze Police Department, Midway Fire District, Pace Fire Rescue District, Pensacola Fire Department, and Pensacola Police Department.

Manna is a local, grassroots non-profit dedicated to fighting hunger in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. To learn more about Manna, the Donut Strike or to make a donation, visit the Manna Facebook page or www.mannahelps.org.
